At the request of the federal government, the delegation of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) is in Brazil on a visit from November 5 to 12 to monitor the enforcement of human rights in eight states. The delegation is headed by chairwoman Margarette May Macaulay.

Meetings are expected to be held with Foreign Minister Aloysio Nunes Ferreira, the officials spearheading human rights protection initiatives at federal, state, and city level, as well as NGOs.

In Brazil, the still unsolved murder of Rio city councilor Marielle Franco and her driver Anderson Pedro Andrade, which took place in March this year in Rio de Janeiro, are the focus of the commission’s work. The commission recommended the adoption of measures to protect Franco and her family, as well as her widow Mônica Benício.

Mission

The commission monitors and considers human rights–related issues in the 35 OAS members countries. Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Brazil deserved special attention from commission members over the last few months.
