One in every three Brazilians admits that they have bought contraband at least once, according to a survey by Datafolha Institute released Monday (May 25). At least 40% of respondents said they know how to recognize an illegal item.

A total 4,000 respondents were heard between April 22 and 24 for the survey, which was commissioned by the Brazilian Institute for Ethical Competition (ETCO). According to 53% of them, the main reason for buying contraband is their lower prices compared to legal merchandise. Among those who admit buying illegal goods, 76% say they were lured by the pricing. However, 37% of respondents said they do not see any benefits in buying smuggled items.

Most of the respondents (92%) believe that people would no longer buy contraband if the legal items were cheaper. In the opinion of 89% of respondents, the illegal merchandise is cheaper because tax is not paid on it. For 87% of the consumers heard in the survey, the lower prices are possible because these items circumvent regulatory controls, and 77% believe that the products are of lower quality.
