Brazilians' spending abroad up 2.7% in September

According to the Central Bank, one reason is the drop in the exchange

Brazilians' spending abroad increased in September for the second consecutive month, according to Central Bank's data, released today (Oct. 25) in Brasília. It has reached $1.294 billion, up 2.7% compared with September 2015 ($1.260 billion).

In August this year, spending increased 2.3%, compared with August 2015, the first expansion since January 2015.

"Apparently we have begun a new growth trend for international travel expenses," said the head of the bank's Economic Department, Tulio Maciel.

Maciel pointed out that one of the reasons behind this trend is the exchange rate that reached R$4 earlier this year and it has dropped now to about R$3,15.

For the year-to-date rate, however,  Brazilians' spending abroad is still reporting a drop. From January to September, spending abroad totaled $10.480 billion, down 25.88% over the same period in 2015 ($14.139 billion).

Brazilians' spending abroad totaled $443 million in September and $4.667 billion for the period from January to September this year.
