Federal Public Debt down to $986.4 billion in January

The outstanding debt shrank 1.9% from December 2016

The Federal Public Debt, which includes the country's domestic and external debt, decreased 1.91% in the first month of this year, going from $1 trillion in December 2016 to $986.4 billion in January 2017. The figures were posted by the Treasury today (Feb. 20).

The external Federal Public Debt was down 9.27% compared to December, closing out January at $36.71 billion.

According to the Annual Borrowing Plan (PAF), end-of-year public debt may stand between $1.11 trillion and $1.18 trillion in 2017.

In 2016, the debt stood at $1 trillion, up 11.45% from 2015.
