Published on 10/05/2017 - 11:10 By Nielmar de Oliveira reports from Agência Brasil - Rio de Janeiro
Brazil's inflation rate officially gauged by the Broad National Consumer Price Index (IPCA) was 0.14% in April, lower than the rates from last March (0.25%) and April 2016 (0.61%). The data was released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) in Rio today (May 10).
The April figures added up to a cumulative 12-month rate of 4.08%, a record low since July 2007's 3.74%. The 12-month result was also within the 4.5% annual target set by the government for 2017.
The overall inflation rate in the first four months of this year was 1.1%, well below last year's cumulative Jan-Apr rate (3.25%).
The inflation rate has been calculated by IBGE since 1980, based on a survey of spending trends of households with incomes up to 40 times the minimum wage (currently set at R$937.00, or $294.13).
