Brazil unemployment rate down 5.3% in second quarter

The employed added up to 91.2 million people, up 0.7%

The total number of unemployed people in Brazil fell by 13.7 million in the first quarter of this year to 13 million in the second. The reduction amounted to 5.3%, according to the National Continuous Household Sample Survey (PNAD-C), made public today (Jul. 31) by the Brazilian Geography and Statistics Institute (IBGE).

Comparing with the second quarter last year, 520 thousand are not longer unemployed (3.9%).

The country’s unemployment rate was also reported to have declined 13.1% in the first quarter to 12.4% in the second. In the second quarter last year, the rate stood at 13%.

The number of people with a job was observed at 91. million people, up 0.7% (657 thousand more people) against the previous quarter, and up 1.1% (1 million more people) from the second quarter of 2017.
