Brazil abolishes over 13 thousand federal posts

One month after the presidential decree that eliminated 21 thousand commission-paid posts, duties, and bonuses at federal level, the Bolsonaro administration announced the end of 13,231 posts. Targeted this time are federal administration positions already vacant or to be made vacant in the coming months.

More than 93 percent of these posts are already reported as vacant. Only 916 will be emptied by the agencies that control them.

Government advisers said that the duties assigned to these posts have been made obsolete by current dynamics. Among the posts are those of gardener, radiology technician, endemic control agent, and agricultural machine operator.

The posts will no longer exist as of June 12, 2019, reducing the staff at the Ministries of Economy and Health, the Office of the Attorney-General, the National Health Foundation, and public administration agency SIPEC.

Streamlining the public apparatus and increasing the making services more efficient for the population have been among the president’s priorities since he took office. With the previous decree, which put an end to several commission-paid posts, duties, and bonuses, the government estimated to spare more than $40 million every year.
