Brazil’s oil production in May this year totaled 2.731 million of barrels a day and surpassed the previous record, reported in December 2016 (2.73 million). The figure was released Tuesday (Jul 2) by the National Agency of Oil, Natural Gas, and Biofuels (ANP). The number is 4.9 percent higher than the output seen in May 2019 and 4.7 percent higher than in May last year.

Another threshold exceeded this year was the national production of natural gas—118 million cubic meters a day. The previous record had been registered in October 2018 (117 million). Natural gas use was reported at 95.8 percent of the total produced.

The results bring the total production of Brazilian oil and natural gas to 3.473 million of barrels of oil equivalent per day (oil and gas measured together).

The country’s pre-salt output was also seen to set a new record, both in volume and in the percentage in the national total.
