Brazil reported 396,993 new job openings in the formal market last year. The positions created in 2014, however, stand for a 64.4% reduction against the ones from 2013, which totaled 1.1 million. Data were released Friday (Jan 23) by the Employment Ministry.

The states with the highest number of openings created were Santa Catarina, with 53,887 (up 2,72%); Rio de Janeiro, with 53,586 (up 1,39%); and Ceará, with 47,372 (up 3,98%).

The reduction in job generation was driven by the negative figures in such sectors as agriculture, construction and the manufacturing industry. Construction closed out 2014 with 106,476 fewer jobs, and the manufacturing industry with 163,817 fewer positions.

The sector with the largest number of jobs generated was services, with 476,108; followed by trade, with 108,814; and public administration, with 8,257 new positions.
