Health system hiring new round of More Doctors recruits

Need for Cuban doctors in 2015 is unlikely, says Health Minister

The 3,936 doctors who had their applications to work under the More Doctors Program accepted in the program's latest applications phase have until today (Feb. 20) to report to their assigned locations to accept the job. This is the first 2015 round of hires of the program, which received 12,580 applications. Doctors begin work on March 2.

Unlike in other phases when 80% of the participating doctors had graduated abroad and did not hold revalidated diplomas, this time more than 90% of the positions were filled by doctors trained in Brazil.

Health Minister Arthur Chioro believes among the factors leading to his change are the newly introduced opportunity to get 10% bonus points for residency applications and increased trust in the program. Moreover, the minister believes that the government is unlikely to need Cuban doctors to fill outstanding positions in this phase of More Doctors, unlike in other stages when they accounted for 87% of the hires.

Also as part of this recruitment phase, on February 23-24 the program will offer an additional 210 positions left over from the initial 4,146 offering.

Every quarter, the Ministry of Health will recruit applicants for any new or unfilled positions.
