Ex-Senator and entrepreneur Luiz Estevão is arrested at the premises of the Civil Police of the Federal District. He turned himself in on Tuesday morning (Mar. 8) to police from the Arrest Division, who were waiting for him outside his home in a wealthy neighborhood in Brasília.

The arrest was ruled by the 1st Criminal Court of São Paulo, and was based on the new understanding of the Supreme Court, which last month authorized imprisonment following a second-instance sentence.

Luiz Estevão was convicted in 2006 in a corruption case involving construction works at the São Paulo Regional Appellate Labor Court. Over the last years, his lawyers were able to put off the service of his sentence after filing a number of appeals with the Superior Court of Justice and the Supreme Court. Estevão is originally sentenced to 31 years in jail for the crimes of swindling, active corruption, criminal conspiracy, and embezzlement.
