Data from the Ministry of Health show that 3,978 cases of influenza A (H1N1) have been reported from January to May 30 this year. A total of 764 people died from this flu. During the same period last year, 19 cases of the disease were reported across the country, and only two deaths.

Among the country's five regions, the southeast region reported the largest number of cases—2,013, of which, 1,714 were reported only in São Paulo. The state also registered the largest number of deaths from influenza A (H1N1) during the period: 352 deaths, followed by Rio Grande do Sul (82); Paraná (54); Goiás (44); Rio de Janeiro (36).

This year, the influenza immunization campaign vaccinated 47.6 million people among groups at high risk of developing further complications with the disease, which is equivalent to 95.5% of the target set by the Ministry of Health.

The vaccination program targets children aged 6 months to 5 years, 60-year-old and older people, health care workers, indigenous people, pregnant women, women who gave birth within the last 45 days, prisoners, employees of the prison system, and people with chronic noncommunicable diseases.
