Brazil's daylight saving time to end Sunday

Daylight saving time in Brazil ends next Sunday (19) at midnight, when the time should be delayed by one hour in the country's South, Southeast, and Central-West.

The change was introduced in Brazil in 1931, and was adopted as a means to save energy by lowering consumption at the highest period (6pm to 9pm) by taking more advantage of sunlight. This allows the generation of energy by thermal power plants to be avoided, costs in electricity production to be reduced.

The government estimates that the daylight saving time leads to some $47.6 million spared, made possible by the reduction in the use of thermal power stations.

Last year, the daylight saving time saved a total $52.3 million.
