The Sports Fan Defense Court ruled that the 23 Chilean football fans detained for hooliganism at a Corinthians vs Universidad de Chile match in the Copa Sudamericana tournament on April 5 have 48 hours to leave Brazil.

The Chilean nationals appeared before the Barra Funda Criminal Court yesterday (12) to post bail. Twenty one of them had the bail set at times the minimum wage (equivalent to $893.43) for disrespect and damage to property, and the other two had to pay five times the minimum wage ($1,489.05) with an additional consideration for bodily injury. The bail money will help reimburse repair work to fix the damages caused to the stadium.

Judge Ulisses Augusto Pascolati Junior slated trial for June 30. The Chilean fans must appear before the Brazilian court or face a contempt of court charges. They have been accused of criminal conspiracy, aggravated damage, rioting, and bodily injury.

The prosecution had a pre-trial custody request turned down by the judge. The charging document said the riot had caused the destruction of 150 seats, a handrail, washrooms, and the ticketing office glass door.

The defendants were found by investigators to be members of a barra brava football fan club and “were intent on going to the game to engage in violent, criminal hooliganism.”
