The city of Rio de Janeiro remains watchful for more heavy rains in a few districts this morning (Jun 21). In Tijuca, northern Rio, Maracanã river once again overflowed its banks.

Last night, the most severe storm was reported in 20 years for June—247 millimeters in 24 hours, according to official data.

In eight hours—from 4 pm yesterday to midnight—11 weather stations stations detected more rainfall than what had been expected for the whole month. According to city authorities, 15 districts had several of their streets flooded.

Fourteen emergency sirens rang during the rain in seven favelas facing high risk for slides. Residents were advised to head for assistance stations and were able to go back to their homes 2 am today.

Mayor Marcelo Crivella referred to the rain as “an unexpected challenge,” due to its strength. “The city has resisted. Now the city must calm back down,” he added.
