At least 16 arrested in joint police operation with Armed Forces in Rio

At least 16 people were arrested in a joint operation with state and federal police forces and the Armed Forces in Rio. The operation is part of a federal plan to prevent a surge in violence and provide security to residents and tourists in Rio de Janeiro state.
Police officers are serving court warrants in seven communities in Rio's north region—Jacarezinho, Alemão, Manguinhos, Mandela, Bandeira Dois, Parque Arará, and Morar Carioca housing project.
In addition to state civil and military police and the Armed Forces, personnel from the Federal Police, Federal Highway Police, the National Public Security Force and the Brazilian Intelligence Agency have been involved in the operation.
An Army soldier was arrested this morning. He is suspected of leaking information to criminals in the communities targeted by the operation. According to the East Military Command, the Army division in charge of Rio de Janeiro, the suspect had been monitored before the arrest.
