The National Museum, which was completely destroyed by a fire on November 2 in Rio de Janeiro, received Monday (Dec. 10) a sum of 180,800 euros as a donation from the German government. The amount will be used to recover items salvaged from the rubble.

Germany’s Consul-General in Rio de Janeiro Klaus Zillikens referred to the donation as just an early stage, as the National Museum will continue to receive assistance. The German government plans to make investments adding up to 1 million euros, which will be transferred according to the needs facing the museum.

The donation is crucial as it will be used for the purchase of recovery materials listed by experts on the search teams. Articles like computers and special gloves will be acquired—one of which to be used in putting back together Luzia, Brazil’s oldest human fossil.

“It’s an amount that’s coming in for what we need. We’re extremely thankful for the sensitivity of the German government,” museum Director Alexander Kellner declared.
