A shooting left five dead and four injured this Tuesday afternoon (Dec. 11) in downtown Campinas, a city outside São Paulo.

The police have no detailed information on how the incident came about. Euler Fernando Gandolpho, a 49-year-old man, stormed into a church, killed four people, and then killed himself. The motivation behind the act is still unknown.

In a note published on Facebook, the Archdiocese of Campinas said the cathedral will remain closed so the victims can be assisted, and for probes not to be hindered. “We count on everybody’s prayers at this moment of deep grief,” the text reads.

As soon as they learned of the incident, city authorities mobilized assistance services. Priority is being given to the injured as well as family members of the dead.

Four people are wounded and were taken to different local hospitals. Mayor Jonas Donizette said he is “appalled” by the brutal crime, and said his prayers go to the victims and their relatives.
