A memorandum of understanding was signed Monday (May 23) by Brazil and Argentina to create a bilateral political coordination mechanism. It will be co-chaired by Brazil's Secretary General for Foreign Affairs and Argentina's Secretary of Foreign Affairs.

The main purposes of the forum will be to share views on topics on the bilateral, regional, and global agendas, and monitor strategic integration projects, particularly in science, technology, innovation, defense, aerospace industry, energy and trade, or other areas that may be considered a priority.

According to Brazil's Foreign Ministry (Itamaraty), the forum will meet at least twice a year, preferably at the beginning of each year to discuss the common agenda, and in the beginning of the second half of the year, to coordinate positions for the United Nations General Assembly.

The meetings will take place alternately in each country. According to Itamaraty, the creation of this bilateral forum celebrates the 30th anniversary of the Iguazu Declaration, which marked the beginning of a closer relationship between Brazil and Argentina.
