In a speech held today at the Foreign Ministry building as part of the Diplomats' Day celebrations, Brazilian President Michel Temer told graduates from the Rio Branco Institute for diplomatic training it will be their duty to tell the world that Brazil is a country of opportunities endowed with a “fresh vigor.”

“You will realize overseas that one of the main demands concerns Brazil's legal security. We're on the path towards a system with absolute legal security. We of the legal field know that there can hardly be investment in the country without such security,” he added, while mentioning the key role of diplomats for the development and the participation of the country in the global scenario.

Temer criticized the way Brazil is portrayed overseas, adding that diplomats are tasked with recovering the country's image in the last months of his tenure. “The data, facts, and information” conveyed overseas, he argued, give the impression that Brazil is a “petty country” that does not respect the Constitution, which as a result reinforces the idea of legal insecurity in the country.

Temer named a few priorities in Brazilian diplomacy: “We're revitalizing MERCOSUR, bringing back its original condition as a democracy and a free market, and we're getting closer to partners from the Pacific Alliance. There should be no division. We must seek the union of the several countries of South America and Latin America.”

Regarding the current landscape, Temer said the world today has distanced itself from that of the early 20th century. “After more than half a century has passed, we are faced with an international scenario that challenges our comprehension. We're living times of uncertainty and instability—a commonplace that is only ever more confirmed, isolationist trends undermining integration dynamics that used to be taken for grated,” the president declared.
