Cooperation efforts between the European Union (EU) and Brazil, with a focus on the promotion of development, tackling climate changes and strengthening of international peace and security are the main topics of an international seminar to take place at 10 am on December 6 at the Edifício Brasil 21 Cultural, in Brasília.

The event is entitled Meeting the Challenges: Europe, Brazil, and Global Governance, and should center on seeking partnership in the diplomatic plans implemented by the EU and Brazil.

To raise these issues, discussions will be joined by EU Ambassador to Brazil João Gomes Cravinho; Ambassador Moreira Lima, president of the Alexandre Gusmão Foundation (FUNAG); as well as representatives from ministries, public institutions, and a number of organizations. Also expected to attend are scholars from Italy, Germany, Argentina, the US, and Brazil.

A backdrop of ongoing cooperation

The EU and Brazil are allies in the defense of democratic values. As made clear by predominant viewpoints in bilateral talks, common values are conspicuous both globally and locally—like the defense of democracy and human rights, the maintenance of peace, a focus on multilateralism, support for local governance initiatives, regional stability and the fight against poverty.

“The European Union today is consolidated as a global actor that casts its principles and values onto the world and promotes peace and stability through multilateralism. Brazil is one of the main partners and interlocutors of the European Union in Latin America, and there is plenty of room for improving the understanding of the European Union, its role on the global stage as well as increasing knowledge about the goals of its external policy,” said EU Ambassador to Brazil João Gomes Cravinho.

The joint statement signed by the EU and Brazil in 2007—which marked the forging of the strategic partnership between Brazil and the European Union—“was clear in the in-depth description of its shared view of multilateralism, which must harmoniously combine the dimensions of all levels (regional, inter-regional, and global) and focus not only on free trade, but also on political dialog, on the common answers to global challenges, the Millennium goals, and economic cooperation,” Cravinho added.
