US Deputy Secretary John J. Sullivan is taking part in the launch ceremony of the Brazil–US Permanent Security Forum, held today (May 22) in Brasília. The second highest official in the US State Department, Sullivan is expected to attend meetings with Ambassador Marcos Galvão, Brazil’s secretary-general for foreign relations.

The assembly will focus on security, the humanitarian crisis in Venezuela, and the “regional support for the restoration of democracy” in that country, a note from the US government reads. The meetings are slated to begin at 3 pm at the Itamaraty palace, seat of the Brazilian Foreign Ministry.

The Brazil–US Security Forum was first brought into discussion in 2015, under former Presidents Dilma Rousseff and Barack Obama. Talks failed to make further progress after allegations arose that Rousseff as well as other high officials in the Brazilian government had had phone conversations monitored by US intelligence forces.
