Brazil chancellor discusses bilateral agenda in Bolivia

Economy and security are expected to be debated in meetings

Railway and energy integration, shared water resources, cross-border cooperation and the fight against international drug trafficking were among the main topics discussed in the meeting held today (Aug. 20) between Brazil’s Foreign Minister Aloysio Nunes Ferreira and Bolivian Chancellor Fernando Huanacuni, in La Paz.

On the occasion, the two chancellors talked about topics of common interest on both local and multilateral agendas.

Strategic partner

Bolivia is Brazil’s main natural gas supplier, and Brazil is the main market for Bolivian exports. In 2017, bilateral trade reached $2.79 billion. From January to July this year, Brazilian exports to Bolivia amounted to $859 million, whereas imports added up to $856 million. In the first six months of 2018, trade was up 11.75 percent from the same period last year.

Brazil’s ties with Bolivia are crucial for both countries, and include initiatives in energy, cross-border cooperation, and the fight against international drug trafficking, as well as the participation in regional as well as global forums. Bolivia is the country Brazil shares the largest section of its national borders—3,423 km. Furthermore, Brazil acknowledges the great importance of having Bolivia become a fellow member of Mercosur.
