Brazilian Foreign Minister Ernesto Araújo is in Poland today (Feb. 13) to take part in a ministerial meeting attended by representatives from 60 countries which should focus on the promotion of peace and security in the Middle East.

The event will be hosted by US State Secretary Mike Pompeo, Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz. Expected in addition to Araújo are US vice-President Mike Pence, and Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Efforts aim to seek alternatives for the construction of peace in the Middle East. The initiative was unveiled early in January by Pompeo.

It will be a forum for countries to address a series of critical issues towards a more peaceful Middle East, Pompeo wrote on Twitter.

Bilateral ties

Araújo will also meet with delegations from the UK and Argentina. British Chancellor Jeremy Hunt will be one of the few European chancellors to take part in the assembly.

The talks with British chancellor come shortly before the departure of the UK from the European Union. Brazilian analysts expect trade ties to deepen.

Alongside Arhgentina’s Foreign Minister Jorge Faurie, Araújo is expected to advance talks already initiated by the presidents of Brazil and Argentina. The two nations are Brazil’s biggest partners in Mercosur, and seek to make strides in negotiations with the bloc and to further bilateral trade deals.

The ministerial meeting should last until tomorrow (14) in Warsaw. Araújo is to return to Brazil on Friday (15).
