President Dilma Rousseff rejected the diplomatic credentials of the new Indonesian ambassador, Toto Riyanto, on Friday (Feb. 20), which prevents him from representing Indonesia in official sessions or ceremonies in Brazil. Riyanto was at Palácio do Planalto (the presidential palace) to present his credentials, alongside the new ambassadors for Venezuela, El Salvador, Panamá, Senegal, and Greece, but unlike them, he was not allowed into the ceremony.

“What we did was, we delayed receiving his credentials, that's all. It's crucial for us that the current situation advances so we can have a clearer picture of where Brazil and Indonesia stand in their relations,” the president told journalists following the ceremony.

On January 17, a Brazilian national, Marco Archer, was executed by firing squad in Indonesia under local death penalty laws on drug trafficking. This prompted Rousseff to recall Brazil's ambassador to Indonesia, which is a form of diplomatic protest. Another Brazilian convict, Rodrigo Gularte, is still awaiting execution in Indonesia.
