Supreme Court (STF) Justice Dias Toffoli declared on Wednesday (Nov. 25) that the court will not accept intrusion into ongoing investigations. He was referring to the circumstances in which Senator Delcídio do Amaral (member of the Workers' Party) had been ordered to preventive detention, because, according to the Prosecutor-General's Office (PGR), Amaral tried to obstruct investigations and convince former Petrobras Director Nestor Cerveró to reject the plea bargain with the Public Prosecution Office. Moreover, the senator would have made promises to intercede with STF ministers so that Cerveró could achieve freedom through habeas corpus. The arrest had been authorized by Supreme Court Justice Teori Zavascki, responsible for examining charges of Operation Car Wash.
"Unfortunately we are faced with this kind of situation, people fostering illusions. Messengers trying to say: I talked to so-and-so, and I will solve your problem. Unfortunately such situations happen, and it is not the first time," said Toffoli about the alleged charges of influence peddling by the senator.
Also according to the PGR, Senator Delcídio do Amaral offered to pay a monthly $13,000 for financial assistance to Cerveró's family if he rejected the plea bargain.
The attorney Edson Ribeiro, the banker André Esteves, from BTG Pactual Bank, and Diogo Ferreira, head of the senator's office, have also been held in preventive detention.
