Leonardo Picciani, leader of the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB) caucus in the Chamber of Deputies, declared that it lacks "greatness" to opposition to agree on a joint agenda to boost the efficiency of the country's management and thus create conditions for overcoming the crisis.

Picciani, who publicly backed presidential candidate Aécio Neves, member of the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB), said  the intense dispute over the presidential elections turned 2015 into a "lost year".

In an interview to Espaço Público, aired by TV Brasil (an EBC broadcaster), the PMDB leader reported that it does not depend only on the government for Brazil to tackle the crisis. "Of course the government needs to do its part: to better govern and to be more efficient in some measures, to improve a series of actions, to take better care of public spending, to enhance efficiency in management and to better control expenses," said the deputy. However, according to him, the opposition also "needs to leave the podium and act with greatness, understanding that it is not possible to set the country on fire with the sole purpose of ousting the president, to contest extemporaneous elections, before the one scheduled for 2018" .

According Picciani, the political confrontation in 2015 has been harmful to the country. "It lacked greatness to the opposition to understand the need to agree on an agenda for the country. Stick with the politics of the worse, the better destabilizes the government and it is not the best option," added the deputy.

About President Dilma Rousseff's impeachment proceedings, initiated by Lower House Speaker Eduardo Cunha, also member of the PMDB, Picciani said the issue should be addressed both by the political aspect, and by the legal argument. He pointed out that until now there is no legal basis, nor "consistency" to initiate the proceedings "because the only allegation was based on the crime of responsibility, which has definitely not happened. In addition, there was not a major mobilization of society. Therefore, neither the political argument has been validly presented."
