President Dilma Rousseff held a speech in the morning today (Apr. 22) as part of the opening of the Paris Agreement signing ceremony at the United Nations (UN) headquarters, in New York. Rousseff mentioned the political crisis facing Brazil, and said that the Brazilian society was able to defeat authoritarianism and build a democracy, and will know how to prevent setbacks.

“I cannot end my words without mentioning the serious moment Brazil is going through. Nonetheless, I would like to say that Brazil is a great country, with a society that was able to defeat authoritarianism and build a pungent democracy. Our people are hard-working and place a high value on freedom. They will know, I am sure, how to prevent any setbacks. I am grateful for all leaders who sent me their sympathies,” she ended her address by saying.

Representatives from over 160 countries signed the Paris Agreement, which aims to combat the effects of climate change and reduce greenhouse gas effects. The signing ceremony of the agreement, completed in December 2015 after difficult negotiations between 195 countries in the European Union, is taking place at the UN headquarters on Earth Day.

To be brought into effect in 2020, however, the deal will  only materialize after it is ratified by 55 nations in charge of at least 55% of greenhouse gas emissions.
