Today (Dec. 7) Brazil's Prosecutor-General Rodrigo Janot rebutted again criticisms against the 10 anti-corruption measures, proposed by the Federal Prosecution Service to the National Congress. According to him, none of measures have been originally created by the Brazilian prosecutors.

The 10 measures proposed by the prosecution service became a ballot proposition, after more than 2 million signatures were collected. However, the original proposition has been approved with several changes to the text, made in the Chamber of Deputies. The bill is now under deliberation at the Senate.

Among the measures excluded from the final bill, there were the use of unlawful evidence, provided that it is collected in good faith, and the integrity test with criminal effect for public officials. Other measures proposed by the prosecution service were to declare undeclared electoral donations, the so-called “Caixa 2” [Slush fund], and illicit enrichment illegal.

Paradigm

"All these instruments are either part of international treaties or part of a system of countries that serve as paradigm for the evolution of the Brazilian government," said Janot, rebutting criticisms that prosecutors would be searching for too original solutions to fight against corruption.

He made the remark at the opening of a debate on the 10 measures proposed by the prosecutors at the Federal Prosecution Service, also attended by Deputy Onyx Lorenzoni, who was in charge of the report on the bill that was greatly modified by the house's floor.

"I apologize for what happened at the Chamber of Deputies," Lorenzoni said. He said he was confident that the deputies will deliberate on the anti-corruption pact once again with its original text. "Let's correct this mistake."

"Hard day"

Janot left the debate ahead of schedule this Wednesday morning, alleging that "it is a hard day" and that he needed time to produce his recommendation on the ouster of Renan Calheiros from the Senate's presidency.

He will present oral arguments in the session scheduled for this afternoon at the Federal Supreme Court (STF) in which they will rule on whether Calheiros should comply with the injunction issued by Justice Marco Aurélio Mello and immediately leave the office.

On a previous recommendation to a similar situation, in which then lower house speaker Eduardo Cunha was requested to leave office after he was indicted by the Supreme Court, Janot defended his suspension.
