Brazil's Superior Electoral Court confirmed the ouster of José Melo, governor of the northern state of Amazonas. He was convicted for buying votes in the 2014 elections, when he was re-elected in the second round with 55.5% of votes. The decision, voted 5-2 and issued Thursday (May 4), is to be brought into force immediately.

Most justices also understood that new direct elections must be held in the state this semester. Vice-governor Henrique Oliveira, was also stripped of his office.

The session held Thursday confirms a previous decision, made in March last year by the Regional Electoral Court of Amazonas.
