In a statement made Wednesday (Jul 12), Brazilian lower house speaker Rodrigo Maia declared that his fellow deputies are not to accept changes in the labor reform passed Tuesday (11) by the Senate. On his Twitter account, Maia wrote that, if Temer issues a provisional presidential decree on the matter, the proposal “will not be recognized” by the house.

“The Chamber of Deputies will not accept any change in the law. Any provisional decree will not be recognized by this house,” Maia wrote shortly after midnight Wednesday. Also mentioned was a news story on the topic, some two hours after the vote.

In a letter sent to senators late in July, President Michel Temer had pledged to veto sections of the text and issue a decree concerning the gaps left by the vetoes. In case a provisional decree is enacted by the president, the legislation is brought into force, but must be approved by both congressional houses.
