In an interview with a radio station, President Michel Temer suggested that Brazil adopts a parliamentarist model of government for the next general elections, in 2018.
“I believe we could think, just hypothetically, about parliamentarism for 2018. I think it wouldn't be altogether unreasonable.”
During the interview, the president reiterated the idea of advancing a political-electoral overhaul elaborated in cooperation with Congress and the Electoral Court, with the upcoming elections in view.
However, some of the changes regarding electoral rules would have to be approved in both congressional houses by next month, because the law on changes in the electoral legislation can only be brought into effect up to a year before the election.
Pension reform
The president also talked about the corruption case against him, filed by Prosecutor-General Rodrigo Janot, noting that his administration has remained active, with the labor reform approved, plus 12 provisional decrees.
In his view, the result of the vote on the case, which saw him relieved of charges, makes him stronger in his efforts to push forward further projects, like the pension reform, which requires 308 votes.
A number of Congress members who voted against filing the case against him support the pension reform, Temer said.
