After a meeting held this Saturday (Feb 17) at the Guanabara Palace, head of the government of Rio de Janeiro, to discuss the military intervention in the state, Brazil's President Michel Temer announced the creation of the Ministry of Public Security. Temer, however, did not answer the questions asked by the press or said who is to lead the new ministry.

“There's more coming. Soon, maybe in the upcoming week or the next, at the latest, I want to create the Extraordinary Ministry of Public Security, to coordinate public security across the country, obviously without interfering with the responsibilities of each state,” the president said.

Rio de Janeiro State Secretary Roberto Sá was ousted from his post, as Army General Walter Braga Netto is to be in charge of all affairs connected to public security in Rio de Janeiro. The military intervention decree has come into effect, but must be confirmed by Congress in order to remain in force.
