Two months after the decree starting a federal security intervention in Rio de Janeiro was signed, President Michel Temer said that the operation is beginning to show its results. Temer, who served as secretary for public security in São Paulo twice, said these actions tend to take time before their first effects become visible.

In an exclusive interview to Empresa Brasil de Comunicação (EBC) news outlets, Temer said he despises the term “military intervention.” “I have appointed a general to spearhead the intervention, but he leads it alongside the Civil Police and the Military Police of Rio.”

In his view, figures that show an increase in murders and massacres may be the response of organized crime to the intervention. The president pointed out that he does not consider replicating the intervention model in other regions of the country. “We’ll coordinate and integrate security all across the country.”

He welcomed the team of journalists from EBC at the library of the Alvorada presidential palace. The interview will be available in it entirety on the websites of Agência Brasil and the other EBC outlets.

*The exclusive interview was conducted by journalists from TV Brasil and NBR with press agents from a number of EBC outlets.
