Brazil’s head for the president’s institutional security, Minister Sergio Etchegoyen, said today (Jun 4) that issues linked to security, defense, and supplies stemming from the recent truckers’ strike have been overcome. The government will now focus on inspection efforts, he announced, in a bid to ensure that the new measures devised in agreement with the protesters are implemented—like the price of diesel.

Etchegoyen went on to say that the Brazilian government will now seek to further advance in Congress the plans agreed on with the truck drivers, who now wait for the changes to get approval from lawmakers.

“Supplies have been normalized throughout the country, and there are no longer any threats to institutional security or roads. From now on, our focus will be on making sure our agreement is fulfilled, the price of oil, diesel, freight, etc. Our political deal with Congress to make these decisions advance depend on Parliament,” he said in an interview. He noted that the inspection will be carried out “with all the energy required by the circumstances.”

Dialog

In a statement made last Thursday (31), President Michel Temer said the strike was brought to an end as a result of dialog. In a deal with truckers’ representatives, the government heeded the demands made by the trade. One of the measures was keeping the liter price of diesel reduced by $0.12 for 60 days.

The minister reported that BR Distribuidora, a subsidiary of state-controlled oi giant Petrobras, has already implemented the discount in its stocks before the move was considered official.
