Brazil’s electorate increased 3.14% in the last four years, a surge from nearly 143 million in 2014 to more than 147 million voters, as per figures released today (Aug. 1) by the country’s Superior Electoral Court (TSE). Voting is compulsory in Brazil for people aged 18 and older.

According to the data, the majority of electors is made up of women—over 77 million, or 52.5%—whereas men add up to nearly 70 million, or 47.5%. In 2014, women amounted to some 74 million (52.13%), and men approximately 68 million (47.79%).

The number of voters overseas skyrocketed 41.3% in the period, going from some 354 thousand to 500 thousand.

This comes as a result of the joint efforts made by the electoral authorities and Brazil’s Foreign Ministry to facilitate the registration of voters living in other countries, said Electoral Court Chief Justice Luiz Fux.

Age

In an official survey, the 45–59 age group concentrates most electors—nearly 36 million Brazilians, or 24.26% of the electorate. Second come voters aged 25 through 34, who total over 31 million (21.15%).

Non-compulsory vote

Young people aged 16 and 17, for whom voting is not compulsory in Brazil, represent 0.95% of the electorate this year, and amount to 1,400,617. Official numbers indicate a 14.53% decline in the number of young electors. In 2014, slightly over 1.6 thousand electors were registered within this age group.

Biometrics

In 2018, the number of voters to be authenticated biometrically soared 240% from 2014. This year, they totaled more than 73 million—50.3% of the total. In 2014, this number stood at some 21.5 million people—15.18% of the electorate.

Electoral district

Of Brazil’s 27 states, São Paulo is still the country’s largest electoral district, with 33 million voters, followed by Minas Gerais, with 15 million, and Rio de Janeiro, with 12 million.
