After being given the presidential sash late this afternoon (Jan. 1), Jair Bolsonaro, the new ruler of Brazil, held an address at the Planalto presidential palace, seat of the Brazilian government, and proposed the creation of “a movement to reestablish ethical and moral values to change the country.” He also argued that “corruption, privileges, advantages, politically motivated and party-based favors” should be brought to an end.

“We can’t let nefarious ideologies divide Brazilians—ideologies that destroy our values and traditions […], our families… I invite everybody to reestablish ethical and moral standards to transform our Brazil,” he stated.

The new head of the Executive branch pledged to “make Brazil take the place it deserves in the world, and bring peace and prosperity to all.” The biggest applause during his address was heard when Bolsonaro said “the people are starting to become free from socialism.”

He said he will make the changed demanded by the majority, respecting the democratic state and the Constitution, adding that his “team of ministers” is qualified to transform the country, and see the interests of Brazilian as top priority, which he said “cannot be disputed” under his administration.

Bolsonaro argued that Brazilians should be given the right to a better life and to an honest and efficient government, and said he will reduce state bureaucracy and improve infrastructure in the country, reiterating that he will bring “an end to the ideology that defends thieves and criminalizes the police.”

He also promised to ensure “the safety of good people and the right to property” and said that basic education will be prioritized. At the end of his speech, he showed a Brazilian flag and said: “Here’s our flag. It will never be red. If necessary, we [will shed] our blood to keep it green and yellow.”
