On Thursday (Apr. 11), President Jair Bolsonaro congratulated Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on being re-elected to his post. “Bibi is a great leader, and we will continue working together for the prosperity and peace of our nations, based on our deep values and convictions,” Bolsonaro wrote on his Twitter page.

Netanyahu amassed 26.27 percent of the slightly more than 4 million votes in the elections held last Tuesday (9) in the country. Second came General Benny Gantz, former defense minister, with 25.95 percent.

Netanyahu’s win sets a new record—this is his fifth victory. In the last days of the campaign, Netanyahu pledged to incorporate the occupied areas of the West Bank. The move makes the peace outlook with Palestinians considerably more difficult.

In addition to the prime minister, voters went to the polls to choose the members of Knesset—Israel’s 120-seat parliament.
