Milestone Thesis: Congress, top court split on indigenous land rights

In a year beset by drought in the Amazon, extreme temperatures, hunger, and malnutrition among indigenous communities, Brazil debates indigenous land demarcation. The Milestone Thesis was declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court, but representatives and senators have approved it.

Deforestation in Brazil up 22% last year

From 2019 to 2022, when the survey was in progress, 303 thousand deforestation events were reported across 6.6 mi hectares. Agriculture and cattle raising were the top drivers, with 95.7% of the total, or 1.96 mi hectares.

Environment minister: Mining sites still found on Yanomami lands

The visit was ordered by President Lula two days after an attack by miners left one indigenous person dead and two injured. Minister Marina Silva was joined by Health Minister Nísia Trindades and Minister of the Indigenous Peoples Sônia Guajajara.
