Viradouro's winning samba paid homage to the serpent vodun cult, originating from the west coast of Africa. The school made its parade entry on Monday (Feb. 12), the second day of the parades.
A parade featuring Portela’s most fabled samba songs marks the end of celebrations this Sunday in Oswaldo Cruz, northern Rio, the birthplace of the biggest winner in the city’s Carnival.
Imperatriz Leopoldinense, Viradouro, Unidos de Vila Isabel, Beija-Flor de Nilópolis, Estação Primeira de Mangueira and Acadêmicos do Grande Rio will parade on Saturday.
The competition kicks off today. A daily 120 thousand are expected to attend in Rio. In São Paulo, this year’s songs deal with black resistance, indigenous people, women, and samba itself.
The 7th edition of Samba com as Mãos is a partnership between the Municipal Secretariat for Persons with Disabilities and the Independent League of Samba Schools in São Paulo.
