The northern state saw 2,057 fire outbreaks last month, and 2,661 since the beginning of the year—higher than all the 2,659 recorded in 2023. In February last year, wildfires totaled 168.
Ninety-one percent of the total is located in the Amazon, mainly in the far north of the region, followed by the pantanal. Roraima, Amazonas, and Pará are the most affected states.
The wildfire in Mato Grosso do Sul has been contained, the state’s fire brigade reported. The recent rainfall contributed to the agents’ efforts in one of the planet’s richest and most diverse ecosystems.
The state governments of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul have decreed a state of emergency due to fires in the northern region of the pantanal, one of Brazil’s six biomes, located in the country’s Central-West region.
A total of 185.7 mi hectares—21.8% of the national territory—came under fire from 1985 to 2022. Satellite images show that the cerrado and the Amazon were the most affected biomes, with 86% of the burned region.
