The president met with ministers a year after the humanitarian crisis in the Yanomami indigenous territory came to light.
In the Senate, the government listed its actions before a committee on the humanitarian plight facing the indigenous people. Ferries, aircraft, and boats were removed, 145 engines destroyed, and BRL 68 mi was blocked.
In the first two months this year, fires reached 211 hectares of the territory, down from 2022’s 557. The shrinkage is said to stem from the crackdown on mining in the region.
The move brings the number of indigenous health medics up 51.5%. “The cause of death of our native people is hunger, malnutrition, and malaria,” said Primary Care Secretary Nésio Fernandes.
“We can’t believe so much money has been lent for agricultural production in this country and no money has come for indigenous agriculture,” he said at the 52nd General Assembly of Indigenous Peoples.
