Salvador – The commander of the Bahia Military Police, colonel Alfredo Castro, declared on Friday, January 10, that 85% of the police in the capital, Salvador, are on the job and that the tendency is for the situation to return to normal over the weekend. Col Castro also announced that PMs who do not show up for work will lose pay (“terá o ponto cortado”).
”The end of this strike has been decreed,” said Castro.
However, the comments by the commander were made at PM headquarters, located in the Largo dos Aflitos, which is next to the Ginásio dos Bancários, exactly where an assembly of PM soldiers decided on Thursday, January 9, to continue the strike. According to Col Castro, that decision was made by a minority who are disobeying an order to return to duty.
“Most of the men are on the job,” said Castro. Even so, the commander admitted it was still too early for the 4,000 or so soldiers and police sent to Salvador by the federal government to leave the city.
