Rio de Janeiro – On Saturday, February 11, police (“PMs”) and firemen in Rio de Janeiro marched in protest over the arrest of leaders of a strike movement and colleagues who were arrested because they did not show up for work; that is, supposedly participating in the strike (although relatives of some of the arrested policemen and firemen dispute this). Also on Saturday, it was announced that an assembly to decide whether or not to continue or halt the strike will take place this afternoon (6:00 pm).

The police strike in Rio, which the Civil Police have announced they will not join, has not had the negative effect on the population that the 12-day strike in Bahia had. Spokespersons for the striking police in Rio insist that the movement is “peaceful and orderly,” and that the population is being protected as they try to negotiate better salaries and work conditions with the state administration.
