President Dilma Rousseff said she was impressed by the situation facing the families affected by the rainstorms Thursday and Friday in the cities of Franco da Rocha, Francisco da Rocha and Mairiporã, in northern São Paulo.

On Saturday morning (Mar. 12) she hovered over the areas affected by the rain and met with São Paulo Governor Geraldo Alckmin, as well as the mayors of the cities, in the Escola Superior de Bombeiros firefighter school, in Franco Rocha, and visited the city's cultural center, where 50 people are lodged.

Rousseff noted that the local landscape is steep enough to make residents vulnerable to environmental disasters, like landslides. “I was impressed, because the whole city is extremely steep,” he said.

According to the president, those who were forced out of their homes will be able to take part in the Minha Casa Minha Vida affordable housing program in order to buy a new house. She said the program aims to have 3 million housing units delivered by 2018.

On the demonstrations slated for Sunday, the president made an appeal: “I call for peace. We're living in a moment in which people have the right to take to the streets and violence should be on nobody's side.”

The president is expected to return to Brasília after the visit.
