Federal Police launched stage 25 of its Operation Car Wash corruption investigation on Monday (Mar. 21), arresting Raul Schmidt Felippe Junior in Portugal. Targeted by Car Wash for a year now, Schmidt is held to be a partner of Petrobras's former director, Jorge Zelada, and a bagman in the Petrobras scandal, and was on the run.

According to the Federal Police press office, investigators at Federal Police and at the Federal Prosecutor's Office at Paraná (MPF-PR) accompanied Portugal authorities in the arrest and search and seizure operations at Schmidt's home in Lisbon.

Schmidt will remain in custody in Portugal awaiting a decision on his extradition to Brazil. “The evidence gathered today should support our Operation Car Wash efforts in Brazil,” Federal Police said in a statement.
