The former Brazil president and former senator José Sarney said in a statement that he is “shocked, outraged and disgusted” at the news that Prosecutor-General Rodrigo Janot is seeking an arrest warrant against him from Supreme Court Justice Teori Zavascki.

“I have devoted 60 years of my public life to the country and upheld the rule of law. I thought I was respected by such an important authority as the Prosecutor-General. I have never tried to pervert the course of justice. I have always valued and strengthened it. I have served the country, most importantly by leading the transition to democracy and the drafting of the Constitution,” Sarney said.

The Prosecutor-General's request, reported by O Globo newspaper, is also targeted at the president of the Senate, Renan Calheiros, Senator Romero Jucá, and the suspended lower house speaker, Eduardo Cunha. Despite the repercussions of the case, the press offices of the Supreme Court and of the Prosecutor-General's Office have not confirmed the information.
