In collaboration with the Federal District government, Brazil’s Human Rights Ministry inaugurated a panel of 110 m² made by public school students in honor of the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Built with ceramic tiles, the work was installed at the entrance to the subway of Brasília—capital city of Brazil and seat of the Brazilian government.

Students were invited to illustrate randomly selected articles from the declaration. After the excerpts were displayed in school exhibits, students chose the drawings that would make up the panel through vote.

Philippe Nothomb, representative from Inscrire Association—which conducted the project and is known for the creation of major artistic and pedagogic pieces on human rights—the original idea was conceived in Rio de Janeiro, where visual artist Françoise Schein coordinated her first collaborative work six years ago with a number of women, following the same guidelines.

The project was taken to 1,001 schools and brings under perspective issues linked to civic duties and fundamental rights.

The initiative is also supported by the United Nations and Alliance Française.
