Some 5 thousand indigenous women from different biomes and all Brazilian states are taking part in the 1st National Conference of Indigenous Women in Brasília from August 4 to 6, with the theme “Women Guardians of the Planet for the Healing of the Earth,” to discuss public policies, rights, and the future of territories.

The assembly is expected to yield 50 proposals for a national plan for indigenous women’s policies for combating violence.

Brazil’s Minister for Indigenous Peoples Sônia Guajajara announced Wednesday (Aug. 6) that a joint ordinance will be signed with the Ministry of Women’s Affairs for the creation of a working group to further develop the plan.

The statement was made in a TV interview on EBC’s Canal Gov.

“In the list of proposals to be presented, we always see the demand to move forward with the demarcation and protection of indigenous territories—a general agenda championed by indigenous women—in addition to strengthening health care for indigenous women in territories with a subsystem but no specific policy to care for them,” she stated.

The themes debated at the conference include territorial rights and land management, climate emergencies, bioeconomy, indigenous women’s health, education and the transmission of ancestral knowledge, and gender violence.
