Unemployment rate in Brazil reached 7.9% in October, a stable percentage compared with September (7.6%), according to data collected by the Monthly Employment Survey, released Thursday (Nov. 19) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The unemployment rate, however, rose 3.2 percentage points compared with October 2014 (4.7%). It was the highest rate for October since 2007, when it reached 8.7%.

In October, the number of unemployed people in Brazil stood at 1.9 million, stable compared with September. However, compared with October 2014, it rose 67.5% (more than 771,000 people looking for job). For the annual comparison, this was the largest percentage change in the unemployed population in the survey’s historical series.

The country’s largest unemployment rate is for the metropolitan area of São Paulo, reaching 8.1% in October, up 0.8 percentage points compared with September, as the survey reveals. In October, this area was the only one to post a rise in unemployment among the Brazilian metropolitan areas.

Compared with October 2014, however, the unemployment rate increased in every Brazilian region: in Salvador, it rose from 8.5% to 12.8%; in São Paulo, from 4.4% to 8.1%; in Recife, from 6.7% to 9.8%; in Belo Horizonte, from 3.5% to 6.6%; in Rio de Janeiro, from 3.8% to 6% and in Porto Alegre, from 4.6% to 6.8%.

For the six metropolitan areas in October, the employed population stood stable in all groups, except industry, which posted a negative percentage of 3.9%.
